Action – Aging in Tacoma

“Aging in Tacoma,” exploring the crucial role local coffee shops play as “Third Places” As we age, our world can sometimes shrink. Retirement, mobility changes, or kids moving away. But the coffee shop remains constant. I want to know what goes into the cup that keeps them coming back, and what goes into the space that makes them stay.

  • The Vibe: This is arguably the most “community-first” shop in the city. It is family-owned (by three sisters) and sits in the heart of the historic Hilltop neighborhood.
  • The Crowd: You will find a highly diverse mix of older neighbors here. It is not just a place for hipsters; it is a true meeting ground.
  • Accessibility & Comfort: It is spacious, single-level (no stairs), and has a dedicated “Community Room” in the back where groups often meet. The seating is comfortable, not just hard metal stools.

The Vibe: “Gritty but warm.” Valhalla is a staple. It smells like roasted beans and dedication. It has a slightly darker, cozier aesthetic that feels like a classic Tacoma den.

The Crowd: This spot attracts the “Old Guard” of Tacoma—people who have lived here for 40+ years and watched the city change.

  • The Vibe: This location is inside a restored historic furniture showroom. The building itself is a metaphor for aging—taking something old and giving it new life and purpose.
  • The Crowd: South Tacoma Way is currently undergoing a revival, and you see a lot of older residents from the surrounding neighborhoods coming in to see the changes.
  • Accessibility: It is incredibly open, airy, and ADA-friendly with wide aisles and varied seating (benches, tables, etc.).

Filming Note: The light here is incredible
